The First > Law of Callahan's Place is that shared pain is lessened, but shared joy > is increased. One of the rules of the original Callahan's Place is that nobody ASKS another person what that person's troubles are. You listen, you empathize, you say something if the spirit moves; but if you ask without an invitation, Fast Eddie the piano player does something with his blackjack and you wake up out in the alley. I'm not saying there's any such or analogous rule here (certainly the net has no bouncer), but that's part of the original spirit of the original Place. -- -- Mark Mandel (InterNet: Mandel@granite.cr.bull.com) /* My employer is not responsible for anything I say, do, think, or eat. */ Path: mit-eddie!bloom-beacon!shelby!apple!apple.com!zardoz From: zardoz@apple.com (The One Eyed Man) Newsgroups: alt.callahans Subject: Re: Spring is over now Message-ID: <6931@internal.Apple.COM> Date: 27 Feb 90 18:48:45 GMT References: <223@vu-vlsi.Villanova.EDU> Sender: usenet@Apple.COM Distribution: alt Organization: Apple Computer, Inc. Well, some of 'em were reprinted in _Melancholy Elephants_ and some of 'em weren't (but you wouldn't know it if you didn't have a copy of _Antinomy_ for reference). If I remember correctly, the four that were reprinted were "Half an Oaf," "Satan's Children," "Antinomy," and one other, which I don't remember (my copies of both are home, and I'm at work...). Sure! :-) One of my friends was complaining last week about a guy who was wearing a walkman and ignoring everyone around him. The thing that bothered her was that she couldn't even hear the faintest buzz from the thing -- it seemed likely that he could hear the people asking him questions but chose to pretend he couldn't. Well, this led her to lament the general downfall of society, and she started thinking about _Fahrenheit 451_ being set in our current day. She fears the only books remembered would be by Danielle Steel and the other bestseller-type authors. (It would be quite interesting; you take on the name of the author whose book you remember, and everybody's name would become Danielle Steel. Parties would be great fun :-).) So my proposed topic is, what author would you be? (authors perhaps) (i.e. what books would you like to be responsible for remembering and passing on?) I think Plato would be cool, or Orson Scott Card if I restricted it to more recent times. Of course he could probably be himself... :-) Whose work would you carry on? -- gary lewandow@cs.wisc.edu "Knowledge is a fractal." -- Samuel Bates Path: mit-eddie!snorkelwacker!usc!zaphod.mps.ohio-state.edu!uwm.edu!lll-winken!decwrl!shelby!rutgers!columbia!cs.columbia.edu!cunixf!shoulson From: shoulson@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu (Mark E. That word refers to a chemical element (Sb, number 51 I believe). The word Robinson used, meaning the dilemma of two equally necessary but mutually exclusive courses of action or belief, is "Antinomy." See the difference? I don't mean to burst on after such a long absence just to bitch about spelling, but it's important here, where there's another word it could be confused with. ~mark o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o Mark Shoulson: shoulson@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu shoulson@cunixc.bitnet {...}!rutgers!columbia!cunixf!shoulson
