The medium-sized teddybear pops in, and re- materializes into Steve [getting to be a lot of Steves around here. Maybe I should go as Bear...]. The cat, meanwhile, slinks over to the Cynic and leaps up into his lap. Steve reaches into his shirt pocket and pulls out a tape, rather grandiosely entitled "The Funniest Computer Songs". "You mean this tape. In case anyone was wondering, it says here," he fumbles around getting the liner out so he can read the part inside, "`Send your check or money order for $8.98 per copy plus $1.00 postage to Vince Emery Productions, P.O. "Out of which I get about fifteen cents in royalties, I feel compelled to point out. Not a bad tape; my songs on it were recorded live at a con, so the sound isn't all I'd like it to be. One of these days I'm going to do a recording of *my* best computer songs, not all of which are funny. Claiming the usual root beer from Mike he waves and grins to Alex and Nao. "Having fun are we? Of course I'm one to talk." (Gee we've got our own Callahan's group right here at Swarthmore.) Stepping to chalk line he gathers his thoughts. "Well I'm back at the Place. I was swamped with midterm stuff and then went off on spring break. I'm glad to say that I survived the midterms quite nicely and had a wonderful vacation. Now that I'm back I have a story to tell. "My roommate and I have very similar academic interests, both being science types. Four semesters in a row we've been in the same physics class. Last spring we were in an intro mechanics course which featured some spectacularly hard problem sets. So every Sunday we would both sit down and work on them, throwing questions back and forth when we got stuck. Another member of the class lived downstairs, and she started coming up to work out stuff with us. "After a few weeks, Jen started coming up more often, not just when working on physics. After noting that she would stick around for a hour or two if Eric was around but only 5 minutes or so if he wasn't, I quickly figured out what was up. My roommate on the other hand was at least pretending to believe that there was nothing going on. This changed around spring break when they finally talked it out and started going out. "This was the start of a wild and crazy spring. I slowly learned that this meant that it was wisest to avoid the room on weekend evenings. I never committed a full-fledged oops; the most I ever walked in on was some serious cuddling which got me quite envious (I was in the midst of feeling very, very single, which I was). However it may have done me good, it got me out and around that spring, and what a spring it was. There was energy all around and it resulted in some of the wildest things happening. I still remember my amusement the one time I came home at 5 in the morning and Eric wasn't there. "Well, spring ended as it always does. Eric was here last summer and Jen went home. Things got a little strained over the course of the summer, but it all worked out come fall. But for me it was different. Jen essentially had a single this year, so for me it meant I had a lot more time alone. Some of that was nice, but there were times when it was miserable, especially after I went through a romantic fiasco of my own. Still, I didn't begrudge his happiness as it was quite clear he was happy. "Now the roles seem to have reversed from a year ago. I'm now quite happily involved with someone (which is part of why my vacation was so wonderful), but sadly Eric and Jen have broken up. There was no bitterness and they still seem to be good friends, but he is indeed single. This means that the emptyness of the room which has proved quite handy since I've started going with Deb can no longer be guarenteed. We certainly have to watch our step around Eric, since I'm sure excessive cuteness is the last thing he needs right now. In short, here we go again for another wild spring." Hildebaby gazes into the fireplace, conflicting emotions in his eyes. "I'm sort of stuck. I sympathize with his feelings; I know it isn't fun, but I can't stop my life to avoid possibly making him uncomfortable." A devilish glem comes into his eye. "Well, here's to the JenEric couple. I hope they enjoyed it while it lasted." With a twisting move he ducks a few thrown peanuts and tosses the glass into the fireplace. As he heads back to take his chair with the other Swarthmore folk he stops and speaks again; "In case you were wondering, I didn't change the names just for that pun. It's been something of a running joke the past year. Oh, Talidin, I don't know if you wanted info from me for your Callahan's posters compilation, I'm a semi-regular poster at best. There's a passage in Zen And the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance about the 'procession of zombies'. A character describes people driving to work (or school) as looking dead. The rat race. Stephen Tyler of Aerosmith said once, 'I like to think I know what I'm doing, but I don't. I'm just movin' along, happy to be pickin' up a paycheck like everybody else.' I sometimes get so frustrated at it all, I want to scream. But, as I said to my paramor recently, 'Kid, you're ALIVE. That's all.' All I ask, folks is that you find something. No, I don't see the point either. My girl looks at my pained expression and asks me 'What's wrong?'. But I can't answer her. I don't have an answer. Most everything seems pointless. But I press on. Why not? If I don't stick around, I'll never see Miss Saigon. Silly? Maybe. But whatever works for ya. "Cynic: I agree with everybody else: You're free to leave, but you won't get thrown out. I forgive you, and sometimes I agree and sympathize with you, my friend. To everybody, I toast the words of Billy Joel: 'I survived all those long, lonely days when it seemed I did not have a friend. Conciously imitating Tom Seaver, he rocks, kicks, and delivers a fastball down the heart of the fireplace, and a thousand glittering shards fly off in perfectly random directions, none of which are outward, thus violating all known laws of motion and probability. Looking a little more at ease, he returns to his corner, muttering the words "arbitration" and "lockout" combined with a few choice obscenities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael F. Artificial smoke rises all around and laser lights play on the car as a man in a hot pink tunic and electric-blue tights slides out. He does a few tumbles and flips up to the door grabs it by the top, pulls up releases into a triple somersault in the air, and sticks a landing next to the bar. "Well I've always loved a dramatic entrance, and since this is my first post since I've returned from spring break I decided to jazz it up." says the little man with the oversized nose. Well, I had a successful Spring Break, finally got my Driver's License (I'm 20) found a great sf- bookstore (Change of Hobbit, in Santa Monica) and got some sleep. But I've come to the realization that if you want to make a name for yourself in alt.callahans, you've got to post. One quick message: Oktave whens the next n-tet number, my clarinet's starting to get a bit cold. (He pulls it out of his cloak and indeed there is visible frost on it). As my title may indicate I thought I'd post about Honesty, either that or Oscar Wilde. My question, how hard do other people on this net find it to give honest opinions and advice? I seem to have a real problem talking to people about serious topics, or at least getting to that point. This is a problem that my ex didn't have much, she would seemingly pour out non-sequiters as soon as they came to her, frequently asking questions about the relationship I wasn't prepared to answer, and often ones which I was afraid to answer honestly. Why was I afraid? Because with the many problems that come with relationships at high pressure schools, it can be hard to tell what my true feelings are. Can you tell her you don't love her because you are trying not to feel any emotions, so you wont break down over the last test. If you let in emotional highs, you also let in the emotional lows. Thus after our breakup I didn't feel a whole lot, occassionally a sense of loss, but no real emotions until later when I was starting to court someone else and started going on an emotional roller-coaster. Well I'm starting to get off my topic, but I'm also starting to get stuff out of my system, so I guess I'll keep going. I've always been an emotional person, though I bet if you ask most of the people who know me, they wouldn't say so. The reason is that I've worked hard to get control over my emotions since about fourth grade, my highs and lows could be so devastating that I couldn't deal with work, so I learned to surpress emotions when they became extreme (Having an awful looking smile helped too). Coming to Harvey Mudd I had the pressure trebled and so had to keep under tighter control for longer periods. Here my emotions weren't controlled they were deadened. I fell in love, but lost all my romantic qualities, because I didn't have the time and energy for them. My life became work and stress relief and little of anything else. Games were stress relief, books were stress relief(and of course great escape mechanisms), and so were love and sex. Then there was the breakup, partly over these things, partly because of lack of communication (which was due in part to shame over these things), and later the courting of another. This person is a virgin and has had no long term or good relationships in the romantic or sexual sense, and is full of different motivations and attitudes. Trying to adjust to this, and become friends with hopes of a relationship finally set my roller-coaster moving and I currently don't know if I have it beat or am just on one of those flat stretches. Well I'm not sure what the reason is for posting this, but if anyone has any comments...go for it. I'm off to work so for now I'm. About 6 feet tall and heavily built, the newcomer is completely dressed in black, from the hat upon his head to the toes of his boots. His hair is dark, but his beard is ginger - it looks a little out of place, but suits him. On the little finger of his left hand there is a ring - dark, deep red garnet set in gold. On the ring finger of his other hand there is another ring - blue goldstone also set in gold. Thin streams of blood, fresh and red, trickle from his left eye and the left hand side of his mouth. The right hand side of his face and neck bear faint scars, mute testament to past trials. He seems a little confused, but buys a large whisky, walks up to the line and proposes a toast... "To Sadness and the wisdom which it may bring..." He drains his drink and hurls the empty vessel into the fireplace where it shatters into tiny shards with the force of the impact. Taking a step back, the stranger pauses and looks at the surrounding faces - his green eyes gazing long and keenly at all he sees. He speaks "My name is Daarin. I have come here to find rest, but I am also prepared to offer help to those in need, if that be your custom. And one day, I may tell you all a story in which you can find the seeds of both despair and hope. But not yet, for the memory is still near and my people do not easily bare their hearts to others." For a fleeting second, those listening to his words see a clear vision of a wolf - large, silver-grey and proud - standing in Daarin's place.
